Vaginal Candidiasis
Causes
This is a vagina infection caused by a fungus, Candida albicans, which lives in small numbers inside the vagina. The infection manifests when the vagina becomes acidic. This is linked to various factors: menstruation, pregnancy, diabetes, antibiotics, steroids, immune suppression, AIDS, thyroid disorders, vaginal allergies and higher dose birth control pills.
Symptoms
- Itching and burning in the vagina and the skin surrounds the vagina (vulva).
- A white or fain yellow curdy discharge from the vagina.
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Swelling of the vulva
Infection is checked through non-invasive swab test by a doctor.
Bacterial Vaginosis
Causes
This is a bacterial infection caused by a combination of several bacteria which overgrow when acidity inside the vagina increases.
Symptoms
The infection can bring about a thin and milky discharge from the vagina with a ‘fishy’ odour. Apart from this, there are no discernible symptoms. The infection is normally discovered during routine gynaecological examinations.
Trichomonal Vaginitis

Symptoms
The infection can lead to a frothy greenish – yellow discharge with foul smell from the vagina.
Other symptoms include:
- Itching and soreness of vagina and vulva
- Burning sensation during urination
- Discomfort in lower abdomen
- Vaginal pain during sexual intercourse
